A 240 litre bin holds roughly four black bags and suits a small office, salon or single-unit shop with modest volumes. A 360 litre is the same footprint but taller — useful when you have the volume but not the floor space. A 660 litre four-wheel container takes about eleven bags and is the workhorse for most retail units, pubs and small warehouses. An 1100 litre holds around eighteen bags and is the right answer for busy sites, larger units and anywhere with a lot of packaging.
The usual mistake is renting one bin that is too big rather than two that are the right size for different streams. If you produce a lot of cardboard, a dedicated cardboard bin nearly always works out cheaper overall than putting everything in one general waste container — cardboard has a value, mixed waste has a cost.
This matters more than people expect and it is the thing that most often causes problems on the first collection. A 660 or 1100 litre container needs a flat, hard surface and an unobstructed route to wherever the wagon can safely stop. Steps, gravel, a steep slope, a locked gate with a key nobody has, or a bin store with a doorway narrower than the container are all things we would rather find out about now than at seven o'clock on a Tuesday morning.
We will look at the access before quoting. If a 1100 cannot get out, two 660s often can, and that is a better answer than a bin nobody can move.
The lid has to close. A bin with the lid propped open cannot be lifted safely onto the wagon, and it also invites the local authority to take an interest in waste escaping from your premises. If your bin is regularly overflowing before collection day, you either need a bigger container or a more frequent schedule — ring us and we will change it. It is a five-minute conversation and it is much cheaper than a fixed penalty.
For most businesses, general waste plus cardboard is the split that pays for itself. Add dry mixed recycling — clean paper, plastic bottles, cans — if you produce enough of it. Glass matters for pubs, restaurants and bars, and needs its own container because it contaminates other streams badly. Food waste requires specialist treatment and its own sealed container.
We will design a setup around what you actually produce and around whether your staff will realistically use it. Four bins in a yard with room for two is not a system, it is a source of arguments.
The national waste firms typically want three to five years, with automatic renewal and an annual price uplift written into the small print. We do not work that way. Our agreements are short, the price is what we said it was, and if we are not doing a good job you should be free to go elsewhere. Read whatever you are asked to sign — by anyone, including us — and pay particular attention to the notice period and the uplift clause.
Even with the right bins, sometimes you get a spike: a refit, a stock clearance, a big delivery of packaging. Rather than paying for capacity you only need twice a year, book a one-off skip or a clearance when it happens. Bin customers get priority on those.
Several of these we will still take away — just as a separate collection, because they have to go to a different licensed facility. Ring and ask.
