Single items upwards · we carry it out for you

Furniture Removal & Disposal

The new sofa is arriving on Saturday and the old one is still in the living room. We will take it — out of the house, down the stairs if that is where it is, and away for recycling. Single items or a full house of furniture, and we do the carrying.

Furniture Removal & Disposal — Smith's Waste Removals

From any room

Upstairs, loft, cellar or fourth-floor flat. Stairs and awkward turns are included, not surcharged.

Booked around your delivery

Tell us when the new one is coming and we will clear the old one out of the way beforehand.

Reused where it can be

Furniture in decent condition goes on rather than into a wagon. Not everything is rubbish.

Mattresses handled properly

Mattresses need specific processing. We take them, we tell you the charge up front, and we do it correctly.

Why the council collection is not always the answer

Most local authorities run a bulky waste collection and for a couple of items left at the kerbside it can be good value. The catches are the wait — often two to three weeks — and the fact that almost all of them require you to get the item out to the front of the property yourself. If the sofa is upstairs, or you are on your own, or the new one arrives on Saturday, that does not help.

We will come this week, often the same week you ring, and we will carry it out from wherever it is. That is the difference you are paying for.

Mattresses

Mattresses are the most awkward item in the domestic waste stream. They are bulky, they are made of layered materials that have to be separated, and disposal facilities charge a specific fee to process them. That is why nearly every waste company charges separately for them and why anyone quoting you the same price for a mattress as a chair either has not understood the question or is not planning to dispose of it properly.

We take them, we tell you the charge before you book, and they go to a facility that strips the springs, foam and textiles for recycling. If your mattress is going in a skip instead, mention it when you book that skip so we can add it correctly.

Getting it out of the house

Sofas that came in through a window, wardrobes assembled in the room they stand in, and beds wider than the staircase turn are all things we deal with regularly. If an item genuinely will not come out whole, we will dismantle it — but tell us when you book so we send a crew with tools and enough time. It is not an extra charge, it is just a different job to a straight carry-out.

We put down protection on carpets and stairs where it is needed, and we take doors off their hinges rather than force something through a frame. Nothing gets dragged across a floor.

What happens to it

Furniture in genuinely usable condition — no rips, no damp, no damage — is passed on where there is somewhere for it to go. It is worth saying plainly that a lot of what we collect is past that point, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. What cannot be reused is broken down at the transfer station: timber frames chipped, metal springs and frames to the metal stream, foam and textiles separated where the facility can take them.

One thing worth knowing if you are hoping to donate an upholstered item yourself: charities cannot take soft furnishings without an intact fire safety label. If the label has been cut off, no reputable charity will accept it, however good the condition. If yours still has its label and the item is in good shape, it is worth ringing a local charity before you ring us.

Office and commercial furniture

Desks, chairs, filing cabinets, shelving and partitioning from offices, shops and units. We can work outside business hours where a clearance would disrupt trading, and we will provide the waste transfer note your business needs. See commercial waste for ongoing arrangements.

What we can and cannot take

Yes, no problem

  • Sofas, armchairs and suites
  • Beds, bases and mattresses
  • Wardrobes, drawers and cabinets
  • Tables, chairs and desks
  • Carpets and rugs
  • Removal from upstairs rooms

Not in a skip

  • Items too large to fit through the door without dismantling (tell us in advance and we will bring tools)
  • Fridges and freezers (see fridge & freezer removal)

Several of these we will still take away — just as a separate collection, because they have to go to a different licensed facility. Ring and ask.

How it works

  1. Send a photo

One picture of the item and where it lives is usually all we need to price it.

  2. Fixed price, fixed slot

You get a figure and a time window, not "sometime Tuesday".

  3. We carry it out

Two-man team, doorways protected where needed, nothing scraped on the way through.

  4. Recycled or reused

Timber, metal and foam separated for recycling. Usable items passed on.

Still not sure?

Describe the job and we will tell you which size, or whether a skip is even the right answer. No obligation, no sales patter.

Yes, and there is no surcharge for it. Stairs, tight landings and awkward turns are part of the job. If an item genuinely will not come out whole, we will dismantle it — tell us when you book so we bring tools and enough time.

Disposal facilities apply a specific fee to process them, because the springs, foam and textiles have to be separated. Anyone quoting a mattress at the same price as a chair either has not understood the question or is not planning to dispose of it properly.

That is what most people ask for. Tell us when the new one is arriving and we will clear the old one out beforehand so you are not living around both.

Usually not on price, but the council typically wants two to three weeks and requires you to get the item to the kerbside yourself. We will come this week and carry it out from wherever it stands.

If it still has its fire safety label attached and it is in good condition, ring a local charity first — they cannot legally take upholstered items without that label. If the label has gone, no reputable charity will accept it, and we will take it instead.

Two ways to get rid of it

Ready when you are

Load it yourself into a skip on the drive, or leave it where it is and we will carry it out. Either way you see the price before you commit to anything.
