Your green bin holds about as much as one afternoon of hedge cutting. If you have taken on a proper garden project — a lawn lifted, a hedge out, a shed down, twenty years of brambles finally beaten — you need something bigger than a fortnightly collection. We take the lot in one go, and green waste gets composted rather than landfilled.
Loose loading is fine. No need to bag hedge cuttings or fill your car boot for six trips to the tip.
Heavy material is our speciality — turf, subsoil, topsoil and rubble from a patio lift all go.
Green waste goes to a licensed composting facility and comes back out as soil improver. It is the one waste stream where recycling is genuinely straightforward.
We put extra wagons on in spring and autumn because we know that is when gardens get tackled. You should not be waiting a fortnight in April.
Green waste is bulky and light, which changes the maths. A 6 yard skip full of hedge cuttings weighs almost nothing but takes up an enormous amount of room, so for pure green waste a bigger skip is usually better value than you would expect. Turn the same job into a soil and turf lift and the opposite is true — a 4 or 6 yard is plenty, because you will hit the weight limit well before you hit the top rail.
The simple version: if it is light and bulky, size up. If it is heavy, size down and load it evenly. And if you would rather not load anything at all, our clearance team will do it — see waste clearance.
Lifting a lawn produces far more material than anyone expects — turf is dense, wet and heavy, and a modest back garden can easily fill a 4 yard skip on its own. If you are relaying a lawn or digging out for a patio, tell us roughly the square metreage when you ring and we will size it for you properly. Getting this right first time saves you the cost of a second skip.
Soil and hardcore must be loaded level and spread evenly rather than heaped at one end — an unevenly loaded skip is genuinely dangerous to lift. Our drivers will say something if it needs adjusting, and it is not them being fussy.
Rotten timber is one of the most common calls we get, particularly after a bad winter. We will take dismantled sheds, decking boards, fence panels, posts and concrete spurs. If the shed is still standing and you want it gone, our clearance team can take it down as well as take it away — just say so when you book so we send the right crew and enough time.
Two things we cannot take: asbestos cement sheeting, which was used on a lot of older garage and shed roofs and needs a licensed specialist, and treated railway sleepers, which are classified as hazardous because of the creosote. If you are not sure what your shed roof is made of, send us a photo and we will tell you honestly.
Garden waste is the easiest waste stream to do right. It goes to a licensed composting facility where it is shredded, windrowed and turned until it becomes a soil improver that goes back onto farmland and into landscaping. Nothing about it needs to end up in the ground. Timber is chipped, soil and hardcore are crushed for reuse as aggregate, and plastic plant pots and compost bags are separated for recycling.
We cannot take it, and neither can anyone without a specific licence for it. Knotweed is a controlled waste and moving it improperly is an offence that can carry serious consequences, quite apart from spreading it. If you think you have it — bamboo-like hollow stems, heart-shaped leaves in a zigzag pattern along the stem, and it comes back with a vengeance — get it identified by a specialist before anyone touches it. We would rather turn a job down than cause you a much larger problem.
March to June and September to November are the busiest months for garden work, and everyone gets the same idea on the same sunny weekend. We put extra capacity on through those periods, but if you have a date in mind for a big project, book it in advance rather than hoping. It also means you get the skip size you actually wanted.
Several of these we will still take away — just as a separate collection, because they have to go to a different licensed facility. Ring and ask.
